About the workIn the nineteenth century, the cypresses in the gardens of the Villa d’Este in Tivoli attracted painters who had travelled to Italy for educational purposes. Johann Wilhelm Schirmer headed south for around a year in 1839. It didn’t take him long to visit the Villa d’Este, where he noted in his diary: “I must return here to make studies.” His interest in the cypresses was centred entirely on the view upwards and the play of light and shadow in the treetops – a motif that seems modern today.
