About the workTwo women with impassive expressions sit next to each other on chairs, while a third is perched in the background. What are they waiting for? As is often the case in Jankel Adler’s works, humans are placed at the centre. In addition to the crudely formed bodies, another characteristic feature of his oeuvre is the earthy colours, to which he often added sand. The Polish Jewish artist taught at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in the early 1930s and was a member of numerous artists’ associations, including the Young Rhineland and the Cologne Progressives. Adler fled to Paris in exile in 1933.
