not on displayThe Düsseldorf painter Carl Ferdinand Sohn painted a portrait of his 23-year-old pupil. Marie Wiegmann, née Hancke, was in Düsseldorf from 1841 to train as a painter. As women were not admitted to the art academy at the time, Wiegmann took private lessons, including from Sohn. He had been a professor at the art academy since 1838 and was known above all for his lifelike rendering of skin. This earned him numerous portrait commissions. "Everyone considered it an honor to be painted by Sohn," wrote his fellow painter Moritz Blanckarts in 1877 retrospectively.
