About the workThis picture, which brought Carl Ferdinand Sohn early success at the Berliner Kunstausstellung (Berlin Art Exhibition), strengthened the reputation of Düsseldorf painting. For his first large work, Sohn chose a moment from Torquato Tasso’s sixteenth-century epic “Jerusalem Delivered”, which was popular at the time. The witch Armida wants to kill the Christian crusader Rinaldo in order to prevent the conquest of Jerusalem. However, she falls in love with him and abducts him into her enchanted forest. Sohn captured the devoted gaze of the literally spellbound Rinaldo.
