About the workThis portrait by Wilhelm Schadow, who became director of the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 1826, depicts his children Sophie and Rudolf. The background, which was highly praised by his contemporaries, was not completed by Schadow himself. He had commissioned his fellow artist Johann Wilhelm Schirmer to do it. However, Schadow was so dissatisfied with the result that he had the landscape repainted by Schirmer’s pupil, Caspar Scheuren. The latter accepted the task only reluctantly, as he was embarrassed to have to correct his teacher’s work. The painting was acquired for the municipal art collection in 1959. In the period between 1931 and 1941 it may have been in the possession of the Düsseldorf gallery owner Max Stern, who, as a Jew, was forced to give up his business in 1937. As the circumstances surrounding the ownership of the picture at that time could not be fully determined, the state capital decided to restitute it to the Max Stern Foundation and reached a repurchase agreement in 2023.
