About the workThese and other panels in the Kunstpalast's glass collection are originals from Cologne Cathedral. When the windows were restored in the nineteenth century, damaged panels were replaced with slightly modified copies. Until the middle of the twentieth century, there was no way to bond glass that was both weatherproof and “invisible”; instead, it had to be fixed with obtrusive lead came. The original panels, which came from the north aisle of the cathedral, entered into the possession of a collector and dealer, the Aachen canon Franz Bock. In 1887, they were acquired by the former Museum of Applied Arts in Düsseldorf.
