About the workThe quality of Rembrandt’s etchings becomes clear in this work. At first glance, the image seems to be almost entirely black. But then the viewer’s eyes become accustomed to the darkness; starting from the light of the candle, the seated figure and the open books can be examined. The deep black results from innumerable precise hatchings on the printing plate – the artist’s signature at the bottom right is barely legible between them. The Dutch artist realised numerous prints that were copied and imitated on multiple occasions, even during his lifetime.
