About the workMany Ottomans came to Berlin with the Turkish envoy Achmed Efendi in 1763. Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki, who was still at the beginning of his career as a printmaker, captured the Prussian king’s guests in drawings and etchings. Here he focused on the men from the ambassador’s large entourage who sold dates and hazelnuts in the streets. The artist’s early work often features such casually observed situations, which are enthralling in their immediacy.
