on display, room 012 About the workMount Fuji rises from a vast mountain landscape that opens up before the hikers. The impression of spatial depth in this woodcut is created by the colour gradients on the rocks and in the sky. The woodblock artist Suzuki Chimpei learned this printing technique – known as bokashi – from his teacher Andō Hiroshige, who is considered one of Japan’s most prominent landscape artists. After the death of his master, Chimpei took over his legacy as Hiroshige II and modernised his style in order to appeal to the art market, which had become increasingly influenced by international trade.
