About the workThe British artist Ellen Louise Clacy has taken up a historical theme here. In 1665, a plague epidemic broke out in London. The “Great Plague”, as it is known in Britain, claimed around 100,000 lives. Fear of the contagious disease is written all over this young woman’s face. The title under which the painting was shown at the Royal Academy of Arts in London in 1887 alludes to the biblical parable of the prodigal son who is welcomed back by his father. The subject of this portrait is seeking refuge in the building belonging to the horners’ guild, which has not yet been ravaged by the plague.
