on display, room 008 About the workThe prolific etching artist Carl Wilhelm Kolbe made his mark on art history with the ‘‘Kräuterstück’’ (vegetation piece), a fantastical type of picture that can only be found in his body of work. It is characterised by the herbaceous plants that dominate the image and hinder any view into the distance. The lush foliage is combined with figures or animals that appear disproportionately small, further emphasising the impression of rampant nature. Although the plants appear realistic, Kolbe never drew directly from nature. He rather relied on his imagination.
