About the workDuring two trips to England at the end of the 1950s, the Dresden artist Willy Wolff became familiar with the art scene there. This caused him to turn away from a realistic approach to painting and to experiment with abstract forms, as shown by this work. The canvas is divided into geometric planes of colour. The path that gives the picture its title appears as an elongated white rectangle that tapers towards the vanishing point in the background. This new visual language stood in contrast to the GDR’s official artistic style, which is why Wolff was banned from exhibiting.
