About the workThrough the narrow streets of Palestrina, a small town not far from Rome, white-robed pallbearers make their way to the marketplace. Tall buildings swallow the rest of the sunlight that illuminates a Madonna on the church. Oswald Achenbach’s style is characterised by a wealth of detail and a lively style of painting and drawing. From 1845 onwards he travelled through Italy, studying cities and landscapes there and creating several everyday scenes of this kind. This work is a study for a painting of the same name from 1859.
