About the workZanele Muholi’s work is characterised by a politically motivated experimentation with roles. The artist’s oeuvre is dedicated to people who are persecuted because of their gender or sexual identity. Although protected by law, these individuals are still subject to discrimination in South Africa, Muholi’s country of origin. For the photographic self-portraits from the series “Hail the Dark Lioness”, Muholi used a variety of material attributes. The images draw their power from the artist’s intense gaze, which is directed directly at the camera and therefore at the viewer.
