About the workAfter studying in Paris and Munich, German painter Johann Anton Ramboux travelled through Italy from 1816 to 1842. Working on his own initiative to create a “copy museum” dedicated to Italian art history, the artist documented numerous works found in medieval churches in colour. He was also a frequent visitor to the Vatican in Rome, where he copied works such as the tapestries in the rooms of Pope Pius VII, which were designed by Raphael between 1517 and 1521. Around 1840, the future Prussian King Frederick William IV acquired Ramboux’s collection of copies and donated it to the city of Düsseldorffor use in teaching at the academy.
