About the workThis decorative object was originally part of a blanket from a Coptic tomb used for burying the dead. The Egyptian inhabitants of the Nile Valley had been referred to as Copts since the first century AD. As the region received increasing Arabic and Islamic influences, the term was later applied solely to the Christians of the Coptic Church in Egypt. The subject of the depiction on the edge is the wine harvest. In addition to the vines and grapes are two naked men. This motif is based on the Greek myth of Dionysus, the god of wine and pleasure.
