About the workAfter studying in Paris and Munich, Johann Anton Ramboux travelled throughout Italy between 1816 and 1842. For his own “museum of copies” of Italian art history, he reproduced numerous works from medieval churches in coloured gouaches, including the murals in the upper church of the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi. These 28 gouaches after Giotto’s famous frescoes, painted around 1300, belong to a collection of 327 copies by the artist. The later Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV acquired them around 1840 and gave them to the city of Düsseldorf to be used for teaching at the academy.
