About the workHow do people behave among kindred spirits; what happens to individuals when they want to express their belonging? Neal Slavin examines occupational groups and associational life. He looks at a beauty pageant or a convention of “Star Trek” fans. The groups always actively participate in their image, negotiating how they want to be portrayed with each other and with the photographer. Slavin is just as interested in the lead-up to the shot, as well as the rearrangement of the subjects, as he is in the final result.
