About the workBetween city and countryside – Sibylle Bergemann is known for her expressive portraits and precise observations of public space. Both the urban hustle and bustle of Berlin and the rural life of Brandenburg aroused her interest. The East Berlin photographer’s images reveal her sense of the moment: Be it a look that seems to symbolise the emotional world of an entire generation, or the view of two fallen angel statues that could also be read as a subtle reference to the destruction of numerous churches by the GDR regime.
