About the workThis photograph of a soldier at the moment of death is one of the most famous war photographs of all time. Taken during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), it shows a Republican fighter during a battle near Córdoba – at least according to the photographer himself, Hungarian-American war reporter Robert Capa. To this day, historical research is being conducted as to whether the photo was staged or captured an authentic moment. On the one hand, it is an icon of war reportage; on the other, it lies at the centre of the debate about the reliability of photography as a witness.
