About the workThe eastern façade of the Prellerhaus, which was completed in 1926, was a popular photographic subject. The building served as a student dormitory for the Bauhaus, as the art school in Dessau was known. The school closed in the early 1930s due to political pressure from the National Socialists. Architecture student Gerd Balzer photographed the striking deserted balconies, focusing his interest on the design of the structure. The dynamic camera angle is a hallmark of Neues Sehen (New Vision), a photographic movement that developed largely at the Bauhaus.
