About the workManipulated photographs and montages played an important role in fascist propaganda. These works by Ernst Schieron demonstrate that this artistic technique, originally developed by the avant-garde of the 1920s, could just as easily feature ideological content. Echoing the montage process, the National Socialists appropriated Labour Day on 1 May and turned it into a propaganda event. With the campaign slogan “Freedom and Bread”, the 1936 Reichstag election was a sham election that was not free or fair because the Nazi Party was the only political party on the ballot.
