About the workPrecise advertising photography meets rebellious visual imagery in the work of Grete Stern (Ringl) and Ellen Auerbach (Pit). They studied under Walter Peterhans at the pioneering Bauhaus art school in Dessau. Characterised by a sober style, their arrangements of objects are distinguished by their experimentation with illusions. As representatives of the new, self-determined image of women in the 1920s, Ringl and Pit interrogated the appearance and reality of femininity. In 1933, these Jewish photographers were forced to flee Germany to escape persecution by the National Socialist regime.
