About the workWith her films about major propaganda events, Leni Riefenstahl defined the visual imagery of National Socialism. These photographic stills are from her film “Olympia”, which documented the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. In one of them, the camera captures the athletes in a high-angle shot, emphasising the regimented arrangement of their bodies. The way this is framed makes the mass of people seem limitless, as if they continue beyond the edges of the image into infinity – a deliberate effect. The other photograph focuses on the dramatic lighting of the games.
