Albums with photos in conveniently standardised formats, so-called cartes de visite, became popular as early as the mid-19th century. Communities did not necessarily come together in the same picture, but in many individual portraits, which were actively exchanged and kept track of in lists. A well-filled album made strong social bonds visible to later generations. Then as now, creating and annotating photo albums, as well as the storytelling that goes with them, always means positioning oneself in a social context.
