About the workThe Mosque of Muhammad Ali was built in the Citadel of Cairo after a gunpowder explosion that occurred in 1824. This place of worship was commissioned by and named after the then governor of the Ottoman province of Egypt, Muhammad Ali Pasha, also known as Mehmed Ali Pasha. Another title for this Ottoman-style structure with baroque elements is the Alabaster Mosque because of its alabaster-clad interior walls. The construction of the mosque took 60 years. This photograph depicts the eastern side of the building.
