About the workWith vigorous pencil strokes, the painter Wilhelm Camphausen has captured the dynamic movement of rider and horse. The subject is General Joachim Murat, who had been appointed Grand Duke of Berg by Napoleon. The drawing was likely created as a sketch for a painting that Camphausen executed around 1850. It depicted the general of the Napoleonic army being pursued by Lieutenant von Lippe during the Battle of Liebertwolkwitz in 1813. Camphausen enjoyed great success with equestrian scenes and battle paintings and received numerous public commissions.
