About the workMichael Thonet had developed a process for bending plywood into shape using steam as early as 1830. In 1852, the Thonets received the first patent for their invention. Their lightweight tables and chairs originally served as furniture for inns, but this changed around 1900 when artists and designers created bentwood furniture in the curved formal language of the Viennese Art Nouveau. A clear, reduced design came to the fore, as demonstrated by this rocking chair, which was manufactured after the First World War in the newly founded Czechoslovakia.
