About the workFrench artist Marie Laurencin frequently painted girls and young women. She gave many of her figures strikingly dark eyes. In this self-portrait, she also depicted herself in this way. It was probably created in Düsseldorf, where she lived between 1919 and 1921 with her then-husband, the painter Otto von Wätjen. The Düsseldorf art dealer Alfred Flechtheim published and gifted it to what is now the Kunstpalast in 1921.
