About the workThe image on this chalice has been “stipple engraved” with a diamond point. This technique, which is like a test of patience, was invented by the merchant, poet and biologist Frans Greenwood in Dordrecht around 1722. He possibly adopted the design from the stippling of shadows in pencil drawings, which was a common technique among naturalists. Greenwood did not practise stippling to earn a living. He decorated the chalice to commemorate the wedding of Paulus Gevaerts, mayor of Dordrecht, and Catharina Albinus in 1739. The bride died in 1741 and Greenwood dedicated a poem to her.
