on display, room G13 About the workThis Pietà is one of the most figurative works in the oeuvre of the Czech sculptor Jan Fišar. It depicts Mary with Christ lying dead across her lap on the evening of the Descent from the Cross. This motif, which represents the Virgin Mary’s mourning for her son, first appeared in Germany at the beginning of the fourteenth century. Fišar reduces the representation to the coverings: Mary’s cloak and Christ’s shroud. The shroud is reminiscent of the swaddling cloth; in the end, the lamentation of Christ resonates with the beginning, the birth of Christ.
