About the workThe lines themselves reveal how Winfred Gaul created these drawings in late summer 1984. The overlapping marks show the order in which they were drawn, while the varying thickness of the strokes suggest how quickly they were executed. The colour structures stand out brilliantly against the black underground, lending the surface a sense of spatial depth. Despite sharing the same starting point, the two sheets produce different effects. The drawing executed on 3 August directs its energy outwards, whereas the one from 21 September concentrates the tension in the centre. Building on the spontaneous expressive power of his early paintings, Gaul continued to explore line and space here, albeit under different conditions.
