on display, room GAUL. Werke aus der Sammlung Kemp About the workTwo collages from 1970 feature intertwining diagonal bands in blue, red, yellow, black and white, forming dynamic compositions. In 1975, when Winfred Gaul was commissioned to create an artistic design for Bremen’s municipal data centre, he translated these works into large-scale paintings. There, he transformed the two-dimensional arrangements he had realised on paper into a spatial experience. It was only by following the directional cues of the coloured bands and walking past the murals from a distance that were viewers able to take in the structure as a whole. In this way, the images invited viewers to take a break from their everyday working lives for a moment.
