About the workThe Düsseldorf patron Udo van Meeteren acquired the vase at the 27th Venice Biennale in 1954, which had also become a showcase for the glassworks in Murano. A particularly large number of unusually innovative works were shown that year. In contrast, the Fratelli Toso glassworks presented its very own Venetian technique: Transparent glass rods with coloured glass threads which, when melted onto vessels, create a pattern of lines and weaves. The term “filigrana” goes back to decorations in the goldsmith’s art and describes a particular delicacy.
