About the workThe little-known painter Ernst Hardt, who trained in Düsseldorf, was one of the innovators of landscape painting around 1900. He replaced the earthy tones that had previously been common with stronger colours and reduced his motifs to clear compositions. Cloud formations and lighting conditions were of special interest to him. His opponents considered his works to be too decorative. Hardt, who had also undertaken further study trips, focussed primarily on landscapes of the Lower Rhine and the Bergisches Land (Berg Country) around the turn of the century. He died in 1917 as a result of an illness he contracted during the war.
