About the workHAP Grieshaber created this work on paper for the patrons of the first volume of his catalogue raisonné of woodcuts. The addition of “Stifterbild” (donor picture) to the title alludes to this. Printed in seven different colours, the image is a tribute to the sixteenth-century German painter and printmaker Albrecht Dürer. Grieshaber transported Dürer’s copperplate engraving “Melencolia I” from 1514 to the 1950s: a figure sits with her head resting in her hand, making her inner despair visible to the outside world. The sun and flowers are shown in ovals behind her as symbols of hope.
