About the workThe Düsseldorf-born artist Winfred Gaul paid homage to the work of the Russian artist Kazimir Malevich with a series of ten screen prints. Featuring a black square on a white background, Malevich’s milestone of abstract art was presented for the first time in 1915. Like this “Black Square”, Gaul dispensed with exact right angles for his black plane divided into two vertical rectangles; he also added yellow on three sides, resulting in a shadow-like effect.
