About the workThis figure would have originally stood in front of a pillar in a depiction of the Flagellation of Christ. This is indicated by the small holes in the back section as well as the fact that the figure is standing with the right forearm behind its back. The focus is on the beautiful, elongated body of Christ and not on the agony he had to endure before the crucifixion. This idealised representation is typical of artists such as the Florentine sculptor Giambologna and his pupil Adriaen de Vries.
