About the workAccording to the biblical narrative, the Holy Family fled to Egypt at the behest of an angel because the Jewish King Herod wanted to have Jesus killed. The relief comes from the base of a famous marble group portraying Mary with the infants Jesus and John. Gabriel Grupello had created the work for the gallery building of Elector Johann Wilhelm, which later became the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. The sculpture was lost in the gallery fire of 1872. The base relief, however, remained intact.
