on display, room 005 About the workThe busts of Elector Johann Wilhelm and his wife Anna Maria Luisa de’ Medici originally flanked the entrance to the Düsseldorf Gemäldegalerie. With the appointment of Gabriel Grupello as court sculptor in 1695, Düsseldorf had gained an artist of international renown. By the time the elector died in 1716, a large number of works had been created that were primarily intended to symbolise his claim to power. This bust shows the ruler wearing an ermine cloak and the chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece awarded by the Habsburg emperor, which underlines his special connection to the imperial house.
