About the workWith his “Proust” armchair, Alessandro Mendini invoked the form of a baroque item of furniture, which he then covered with an impressionist pattern, a reproduction of an enlarged section of a painting by Paul Signac. By mixing two historical styles, Mendini developed a new item of furniture that was charged with meaning and no longer about classical design qualities, such as function or a style appropriate to the material, but about originality and fun. “Proust” was Mendini’s first piece of furniture for the Studio Alchimia design collective, which was founded in Milan in 1976 by siblings Adriana and Alessandro Guerriero.
