The Virgin and Child enthroned, ca. 1290

“I like the 'Thronende Muttergottes' (Virgin and Child Enthroned)! Their smiles, their gazes and Mary’s slightly leaning upper body make them look unusually approachable, friendly and almost a little ironic; they both appear to have a sense of humour! Even Jesus’ finger does not seem raised in exhortation, but rather as a childish: ‘I want to say something too.’ In my opinion, this is a very tender and human depiction of Mary with baby Jesus, which places itself on the same level as the viewer and therefore conveys the impression of being quite intimate.” Beate Fleckenstein, Project Manager, Construction
“This 'Thronende Muttergottes' (Virgin and Child Enthroned) by the 'Master of Erminold' is a work that puts me in a good mood: the mischievous smiles of the Madonna and the infant Jesus and the light irony are contagious to me!” Dr Christiane Jungklaus, Provenance Research

About the workThe image of the Mother of God changed over the centuries. Her smile and Christ’s childlike features make this depiction welcoming and approachable. Although the now lost symbols of sovereign majesty – the crown and sceptre – were retained, they no longer served as symbols of distance and severity. The seemingly elongated central section of the figures is explained by their original location, probably a high altar. Details indicate that this sculpture was created by the Master of Erminold from Regensburg, whose name is derived from his most significant work, the tomb of the abbot Erminold.
