About the workThe style of the Belgian artist Henry van de Velde has no antecedents in either history or nature. The linear ornamentation is not superficially applied to his objects, but is always part of their structure. This is also true of this stained-glass window, as the lead strips that hold the glass panes together are both framework and outline. This staircase window from the Lübeck senator Emil Possehl’s summer residence formed a cohesive whole with the rest of the interior, which was designed by van de Velde from top to bottom.
