on display, room 020Since the Middle Ages, the depiction of the crucified Jesus has been at the centre of the Christian faith. According to this belief, he died on the cross to take upon himself the penalty for mankind’s sins. Jesus’ resurrection symbolises the hope of eternal life. This small work by Gabriel Grupello, the court sculptor for Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz (1658-1716), was intended for private use. In addition to its religious significance, the focus is particularly on the expressive physicality of the crucified figure. The anguish that he suffers is further emphasised by the dynamic movement of the flapping loincloth and the painfully contorted posture.
