not on displaySome Christian faiths believe that Mary, being free from sin, was carried to heaven by two angels directly after her earthly life. As the mother of Jesus, her outstretched arms refer to her role as the mediator between man and God. With the expansion of the Marian cult from the 16th century onwards, the number of altars dedicated in her honour increased. This piece comes from the crowning of one such altar. It has not yet been possible to attribute the work to a specific workshop, but stylistic comparisons suggest that it was made in the Vienna area.
