About the work
The two putti symbolise the seasons: Summer is presented as a female figure holding a bundle of grain, winter as a small boy holding a fire pot. Autumn and spring are missing. The entire group was presumably intended to be placed in a garden. The statues were created by the workshop of the Flemish sculptor Artus Quellinus, who was known for his portrait sculptures and figure decorations on large buildings. Quellinus՚ pupils in the 1660s included the young artist Gabriel Grupello, who was appointed court sculptor in Düsseldorf by Elector Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz in 1695.
