About the workThis king was not always a king. Originally, the sculpture depicted the desert saint Onuphrius, dressed in an oak leaf apron and a cloak thrown over his head. It was not until the middle of the 19th century that the figure was remodelled from Onuphrius to a king. This is shown by a drawing from this period, which records the former state. This made it possible to prove that it is the work of the Swabian sculptor Michel Erhard, which was believed to be lost. The Onuphrius probably belonged to a carved altar that was created in 1491 for the Petershausen monastery near Constance.
