St. Paul, ca. 1740/1750
Lime tree, painted, hollowed back; partial additions
About the workThis depiction of St Paul was created by the court sculptor Dominikus Hermengild Herberger, who had been active in the prince-bishopric of Constance since 1748. It is likely that the two figures, St Paul and St Peter, were placed in relation to each other on an altar, as indicated by the posture of his head and body. St Paul, who was originally called Saul, was an opponent of Christian doctrine. After an unexpected vision of Jesus in Damascus, however, his life took a radical turn. He changed his name to Paul and from then on devoted all his work to preaching the Christian faith.
