About the workThe painter Lambert Krahe gazes thoughtfully at the blank surface before him. Is he thinking about how he will apply the first brushstroke? With this etching, the Mannheim court artist Joseph Fratrel the Elder pays tribute to the distinguished status of the subject: Krahe was the principal court painter in Düsseldorf, director of the Picture Gallery, and founding director of the Academy of Art. He is surrounded by objects that allude to the arts taught at the academy. The easel is a reference to painting, the bust to sculpture, and the etching needle in front of him to the art of copperplate engraving.
