About the workThis painting of Saint Catherine does not reveal the brutal and bloodthirsty nature of her fate – nor the fact that, according to Christian legend, she was beheaded. She appears to be sleeping peacefully while being carried by angels to Mount Sinai for a dignified burial. The Düsseldorf artist Heinrich Karl Anton Mücke produced several versions of this subject, which were very successful. During the nineteenth century, the motif was also popular on collectible cards.
